Benefits of Pet Micro-Chipping Your Pet
At Mokena Animal Clinic, we know that you care about your animal's well-being: you stay up-to-date on all vaccines and preventative medications, you help your animal maintain a healthy weight, and you give your pet the right balance of exercise, nutrition, and socialization to stay healthy and happy.
Of course, preparing for worst-case scenarios is also important. We know how incredibly stressful it can be if a pet runs away, goes missing, or even gets stolen. It's the reason we encourage pet owners to get their cat or dog micro-chipped, since a little emergency preparedness goes a very long way in terms of your peace of mind and the safety of your pet!
What is Micro-Chipping?
A micro-chip is a small electronic chip contained within a glass vial--about the size of a grain of rice that is implanted beneath your pet's skin. This chip can be activated by a radio wave scanner, and, once activated, will transmit a unique identification number to a micro-chip registry (a micro-chip is not a GPS tracking device). By using your contact information which you provide to their database, the registry can quickly and easily alert you if your pet is found.
What Are The Benefits on Getting My Pet Micro-Chipped?
Every year, thousands of dogs and cats go missing, and sadly, many are never reconnected with their owners even if they are brought in to a veterinary office or shelter. Micro-chipping is the best way to improve the chances of reconnecting with your animal if it goes missing. Other benefits of micro-chipping include:
- safe and simple implantation procedure
- micro-chips are lasting--unlike tags or collars which can fall off
- personal privacy is maintained
- special micro-chip registry services, like emergency hotlines, travel assistance, and lost pet alerts
