Spay & Neuter Procedure and Recovery in Mokena

One of the best things you can do for your pet is having him or her spayed or neutered. Here at Mokena Animal Clinic, the procedure is a routine surgery. Our Mokena veterinarian is an exceptional surgeon and will take extreme care with your loving companion. It’s important to understand the basics about spaying and neutering to ease any concerns you might have.

Our Mokena Vet Discusses the Benefits of Spay & Neuter Surgery

Your pet’s health after this surgery is safeguarded in several ways. The most important reason to spay or neuter your pet is to reduce the overpopulation of homeless animals and overcrowding in shelters. Females are protected from the cancers common to their reproductive organs and reduce unwanted litters.  For males, there is no chance of developing testicular cancer. The behaviors of both males and females change for the better as well.

What to Expect from the Procedure & Recovery

These are procedures that must be done under anesthesia. At our Mokena veterinary, we use the safest products and monitor pets throughout the entire procedure. We also keep a close eye on them after the surgery while they are in recovery.

Do remember that your pet has had major surgery and even if he or she is sent home the same day, you’ll need to follow the instructions of our Mokena veterinarian carefully. The recovery is more difficult for females since they have had ovaries and uterus removed whereas, for males, only the testicles are removed.

Coming HomeIt takes a while for the pet’s body to rid itself of all the effects of anesthesia, so expect that he or she may sleep a lot, as well as be groggy and wobbly. It’s best to keep your pet confined for everyone’s safety.

Incision Site: Check the incision daily for redness, discharge, or swelling. Call us right away if you see any of these signs.

Healing Process: Count on 7-10 days for your pet to completely heal. During this time:

  • Prevent strenuous activity
  • Keep him or her indoors except for short walks
  • No bathing
