Bland Diet Tips from Our Veterinarian in Mokena
A bland diet is a diet fed to dogs while they're recovering from an upset stomach. Perhaps the most common bland diet for dogs in Mokena is a combination of white rice and boiled beef, combined in proportions of 2 parts rice to 1 part beef. This food is prepared without seasoning to prevent re-upsetting the stomach. Feed a bland diet to your dog after diarrhea or vomiting has ceased for a period of time, this can help your pet take in nutrients while he or she is recovering from a stomach bug.
Our Mokena Vet Shares Tips for Dogs Who Can Benefit From Bland Diet
At Mokena Animal Clinic, we want your pet to get well and stay healthy. The following tips will help you care for your dog while he or she is recovering from an upset stomach:
Restrict your pet from food and water for the first 4-6 hours-For the first 4-6 hours after vomiting, refrain from giving your pet food or water. This will help your pet's stomach settle. Once the recommended period of time has passed, give your pet small quantities of water. If your pet is able to keep water down, you may feed your pet bland diet food.
Limit the time your pet stays on the bland diet-Bland diets are alright for pets that are recovering from illness but are not nutritionally rich enough to sustain your pet over a long time.
Watch for signs of a serious medical condition-Your pet may be iller than you realize. Watch your pet for other symptoms like lethargy, vomiting blood or blood in the stool, fever and increased heart rate. If your pet displays any of these symptoms, talk to your pet's veterinarian.
