Common Pet Surgeries in Mokena, IL

Common Pet Surgeries

Any surgery for your pet can be a cause for concern, just as it would be for a human member of your family. From minor surgical procedures to major, life-saving emergencies, almost all pets will undergo at least one surgery during its lifetime. At Mokena Animal Clinic we provide a wide variety of surgical services for our patients, and are dedicated to making every pet have a successful recovery.

Most Common Pet Surgeries

The most common pet surgery for cats and dogs, spaying and neutering, is one that we recommend for all pets. Not only does it eliminate the possibility of unwanted litters, it removes the threat of a wide variety of cancers and other health problems for pets. After spaying and neutering, some of our most common pet emergencies and non-emergency surgeries are:

  • Surgical ACL Repair - It’s very common for dogs to rupture their anterior cruciate ligament or ACL. Most pets require surgical repair to stabilize the bones and lessen the chance of injuring them again.
  • Dental Surgery - The dental health of a cat or dog is intimately connected with its general health. Bacteria from infected teeth can spread to the heart, liver, and other organs. We offer dental cleaning, tooth removal, and other dental surgical work as needed.
  • Skin Mass Removal - Both cats and dogs can begin to develop benign masses beneath the skin as they get older. We check each mass for cancer cells, but the great majority of them are harmless.
  • Cancer Surgeries - Pets require surgery for a long list of common surgeries such as spleen, liver, intestines, and peritoneum.

Surgery for Diagnosis

In some cases, our veterinarians may decide that surgery is needed as a diagnostic tool. If a mass or lump is found, either under the skin or seen on an x-ray in an organ, the vet will need to remove the lump to test it for cancer cells.

The Importance of Anesthesia

Surgery can be painful and frightening for animals, just like for humans. During your pet's surgery, we'll use the appropriate anesthesia to help keep it calm and safe. Depending on your pet and the procedure it needs, we'll use an inhalant drug or one that's injected into the veins. We'll administer a breathing tube to make sure your pet gets the right amount of oxygen during the procedure, and we'll monitor all its vital signs to ensure the safest possible experience.

Post-Surgical Care

Your pet may be affected by the anesthesia drugs for a few days after the procedure, as well as after-effects of the surgery itself. Give your pet a calm and comfortable place in which to recover, and keep small children and other pets away for the first few days. Our veterinarian team will advise you on any other instructions that are needed.
